illuminAid: Harnessing the Power of Video for Community Transformation
By IlluminAid team
We are excited to introduce illuminAid, an innovative organization dedicated to using video technology to educate and empower marginalized communities worldwide. illuminAid’s mission is to break down barriers related to literacy and language, ensuring that vital educational content reaches those who need it most. Through their unique intervention model, illuminAid collaborates with local NGOs to create sustainable and impactful change.
illuminAid’s Three-Part Intervention Model: Train, Equip, Empower
- Train: illuminAid begins their work with a comprehensive Video Education Workshop (VEW) conducted with partner NGOs. These workshops provide thorough training on all aspects of video production and integration, from scripting and filming to editing and dissemination. By the end of the workshop, local staff are equipped with the skills necessary to produce high-quality educational content tailored to their community’s needs.
- Equip: To support video production and dissemination, illuminAid supplies their partners with essential equipment. This includes cameras, cordless projectors, and solar-powered recharge kits, ensuring that resources are sustainable and accessible even in the most remote areas. The equipment is selected for its durability and ease of use, allowing partners to continue their work independently and effectively.
- Empower: Following the initial training and provision of equipment, illuminAid offers a year-long capacity development program. This remote support helps partners refine their skills and leverage video for behavior change communication. The goal is to empower communities to use video as an educational tool across various sectors, such as disease prevention, health and nutrition, women’s empowerment, agriculture, and livelihood training.
Diverse Impact Across Sectors
illuminAid’s collaborations with NGOs span numerous critical sectors, demonstrating the versatility and effectiveness of their video-assisted approach:
- Health and Nutrition: Community-led educational videos on maternal health, child nutrition, and disease prevention support crucial behavior change and influence health outcomes.
- Women’s Empowerment: Content promoting gender equality and educating women on their rights and opportunities has had a profound impact on empowering women in various communities, and gives opportunity to showcase underrepresented voices.
- Agriculture and Livelihoods: Training videos on modern farming techniques, sustainable practices, and entrepreneurial skills can support the development of economic opportunities and sustainability in rural areas.

Indicators of Impact
illuminAid measures the success of their video education workshops through several key indicators, ensuring their efforts make a meaningful difference. illuminAid collects qualitative participant survey data before and after the training to measure participant confidence growth in video shooting, editing, and dissemination. To review case studies of impact and read more about the evidence-supported intervention, see illuminAid’s website here.
We are proud to highlight the work of illuminAid and their commitment to using video technology for social change. Their dedication to education and communication aligns with our mission to improve lives and foster education development. We look forward to seeing the continued positive impact of illuminAid’s initiatives and are thrilled to share their inspiring story with our community of development professionals.
Projects examples
Project 1: Climate Resilience with Catholic Relief Services Ethiopia (2023)
In August 2023, illuminAid partnered with Catholic Relief Services (CRS) in Ethiopia to support climate resilience efforts through community-engaged video education. illuminAid hosted a comprehensive Video Education Workshop, equipping CRS staff and JEOP personnel with essential skills in video production, editing, and dissemination. The initiative produced videos on climate-smart agriculture, community-led early warning systems for flash flooding, and best economic practices for food security during lean seasons. These videos aimed to educate and empower disconnected communities through locally-generated messages that will make them more resilient to the impacts of climate change in their specific region.

Project 2: Sustainable Agriculture Practices for Honduran Coffee Farmers with ACDI/VOCA Honduras (2023)
In February 2023, illuminAid conducted a four-day Video Education Workshop in Marcala, Honduras, for ACDI/VOCA and their partners, including USAID. The workshop equipped participants with essential skills in video creation, editing, and dissemination, and provided necessary video equipment such as cameras, projectors, and solar recharge kits. As a result, instructional videos were produced which focused on sustainable agroecological practices like effective compost production and organic fertilizer creation. Videos were shared through multiple channels like social media, text messaging, and local film screenings.
This initiative aimed to support sustainable change in regions where chemical fertilizer pollution, high input costs, and low crop yields were crippling local farmers. This extension project targeted communities often overlooked by traditional farmer-field schools, ensuring that even marginal farmers receive ongoing education and support. In collaboration with USAID and local organizations, ACDI/VOCA ultimately produced a series of 10 agriculture-related videos covering topics like coffee farming, soil management, and improving competitiveness in the coffee sector, empowering local farmers to thrive.
